“Girl shall not live on cookies alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God,” or something like that. Welcome to the April 2026 Bible Study Challenge: Jesus Prays in Gethsemane, part two! In part one (you can do it right now if you haven’t already!), we had our Bible study. Now, it’s time to share what we observed. Remember that your observation may be different from mine, and that’s ok because we’re different people! Just include the answers to all three Main Questions. Are you ready to share? Let’s dive in!
Reminder of Matthew 26:36-46 (Jesus Prays in Gethsemane)
Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.
So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”
Reminder of the Three Main Questions
- Ephesians 5:1-2 tells us to follow Jesus’s example. What examples did Jesus give us to follow when he prayed in Gethsemane?
- How do we not fall into temptation, according to what Jesus said to the disciples?
- Jesus prayed right before he went on trial. How does this relate to Philippians 4:6-7?
My Observation
It’s time for me to share my observation! Again, yours may be different, and that’s ok as long as you included the answers to all three Main Questions. Different parts of Scripture speak to different people!
As you know, we’re discussing Jesus praying in Gethsemane because Resurrection Sunday was earlier this month. The Resurrection Sunday story is very well-known, but I still hope you learned or saw something you’ve never seen before. This story is one of my favorites, as I said in my Resurrection Sunday personality quiz. It’s literally the turning point in history! Ok, let me share my answers to the three Main Questions on this amazing story.
Ephesians 5:1-2 tells us to follow Jesus’s example. What examples did Jesus give us to follow when he prayed in Gethsemane?
Jesus gave us an example to pray during tough times! Because we’re to follow his example, praying when we’re scared, angry, or need help is the best thing to do.
Jesus also gave us an example to follow God’s will. He said, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” God’s perfect will for us in the Bible! That means we should do what the Bible says if we want to follow Jesus’ example.
How do we not fall into temptation, according to what Jesus said to the disciples?
Pray! Jesus said to his disciples, “Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.” That means if we’re struggling with making the right choices, we should pray. Prayer helps us fight temptation, which is a powerful thing to know.
Jesus prayed right before he went on trial. How does this relate to Philippians 4:6-7?
Philippians 4:6-7 says:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Right before Jesus went on trial, he chose to present his requests to God. And the peace of God that transcends all understanding guarded his heart and mind! Prayer gave Jesus strength to endure the trial.
Your Turn!
That’s all from my observation of the April 2026 Bible Study Challenge: Jesus Prays in Gethsemane, part two! Now, it’s your turn to share your observation! Comment in the comments section below what you observed from this passage. I can’t wait to hear from you! That’s all! Bye!
