Mars has seasons! Yes, Mars has summer!
The summer season happens because of Earth’s tilt. Its tilt is 23.5 degrees. If Earth orbited around the sun straight up, there would be no fun seasons to celebrate. Mars also has a tilt! Mars’s tilt is 25 degrees. However, Mars years are twice as long. So, summer would be twice as long, meaning extra summer vacation if we ever colonize Mars in the future 😁. But summer on Mars comes with dust storms. Not the best conditions for picnics!
The first recorded watermelon harvest was in northern Africa about 5,000 years ago!
Watermelon obviously has a lot of water. This made it perfect for the hot, dry climate of Egypt and other places in northern Africa. Slices of this amazing summer treat were even placed in the tombs of the Egyptians to nourish the people in the “afterlife.” Then, merchants brought watermelon to places near the Mediterranean Sea, like Rome. Next, watermelon arrived in China through the Silk Road. China is the top producer of watermelon to this day. Speaking of China, let’s move on to this next fun fact!
Fireworks were actually invented in China!
2,000 years ago, people in China used exploding bamboo sticks. They used them in festivals to scare away “evil spirits.” Then, they put gunpowder in fireworks. Much later, the colors that we know when we see fireworks today were invented. So, what we use to celebrate America on the 4th of July was actually invented in China! That’s crazy to think about.
Summer heat makes the Eiffel Tower grow!?!?!
Yes. Yes, that’s true. Summer heat really does make the Eiffel Tower grow! Iron grows in the heat because the atoms start moving faster and spread out. The Eiffel Tower is made of iron. So, that’s why it grows! The Eiffel Tower can grow 6 inches during the summer. However, it shrinks back down to its original height when winter comes again.
Frisbees were originally pie plates!
Do you ever play frisbee during picnics on summer days? I used to. Nostalgia. If so, did you know that they were originally pie plates?! In the 1870s, Frisbie Pie Company sold them as pie tins. In the 1940s college students found out that they could glide through the air when you threw them. When they threw the frisbees, they yelled, “Frisbee!” Later, people made plastic versions, and the modern frisbee was created.
