Did you know that there is snow on Mars?! This snow is made of carbon dioxide. Basically, the carbon dioxide in Mars’s atmosphere freezes and falls as snow. When spring comes again, the ice turns directly into gas. This process is called sublimation. Also, yes, Mars has seasons! When a planet has a tilt, this causes seasons. Mars and Earth have tilts, meaning they have seasons.
Some animals change color during different seasons! For example, Arctic foxes and Arctic hares change color in winter because their bodies sense the change in daylight. In winter, they are white to blend in. In summer, they change color. That sounds very useful.
Indigenous people from the Arctic developed their version of snow goggles a long time ago! Snow reflects sunlight, meaning it can burn your eyes. That doesn’t sound very good! So, because of this, Indigenous people living in snowy places made snow goggles out of wood or bones to reduce the risk of damaging their eyes.
The biggest snowflake ever found was a whopping fifteen inches big! I’ve never found a snowflake that’s even one inch big, so finding a fifteen-inch one sounds incredible. Too bad it couldn’t be placed in a museum.
The smell of a cozy fire comes from lignin breaking down. Lignin is what makes wood strong and woody. When it burns, it releases those campfire chemicals that smell cozy.
