Fun Facts About The History of Valentine’s Day Candy
Sweethearts or Conversation Hearts
Sweethearts all started in the 1800’s by the New England Confectionery Company. They figured out how to print words onto candy using vegetable dye and stamping machines. The first phrases were long and formal, but they evolved into the shorter phrases we know today, like “Be Mine” and “You Rock”.

Heart Box Chocolates
In the 1800’s, chocolate was a luxury item only for the rich people. Richard Cadbury started selling chocolate in decorative, heart-shaped boxes. After the chocolate was gone, people reused these boxes to store important items, like jewelry. That made the gift long-lasting. In the late 1800’s, Hershey made chocolate available to everyone, not just the rich. Now, you can buy heart box chocolates for Valentine’s Day. Chocolate also has nougat, caramel, and all sorts of fun flavors nowadays. I think the price is worth it.

Kit-Kat Bar
Kit-Kat bars weren’t really invented for Valentine’s Day, but every February, the store sells them in Valentine’s Day-themed packaging. I love giving them to my friends for Valentine’s Day. They are really the perfect gift because you can share them. So, these bars started in 1935 in England by Rowntree’s, a British candy company. Kit-Kat bars were originally called “Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisps.” They changed that name to something that sounded better, Kit Kat. Now, they’re owned by Nestlé. Though they aren’t technically for Valentine’s Day, they are still delicious (in my opinion. Some people don’t like them for some strange reason).

Candy Bracelet or Ring Pop
Candy bracelets and ring pops are also those things that aren’t originally for Valentine’s Day, but are still popular gifts for Valentine’s Day. Candy bracelets started in the mid 1900s when sugar was becoming way more available. That’s when companies started making candy bracelets. Now, we have the traditional ones on an elastic string and the gummy ones that I always gave out on Valentine’s Day when I was younger. As for Ring Pops, they started in the late 1970’s when Frank Richard’s made a candy for his daughter that she could eat without getting sticky hands. The invention blew up and that’s how we got Ring Pops!
