Spring is coming. It’s the absolute perfect time for outdoor Bible studies! Spring is not too hot, not too cold, and the wildflowers are blooming. It’s so pretty outside in spring! So, why not have an outdoor Bible study with your friends or family in this lovely weather? Here’s my step-by-step guide on how to plan an outdoor spring Bible study in your backyard! Let’s dive in!
Right Day and Time
Choosing the right day and time is the first thing you should do. Choose a day that’s not too windy so your notes don’t fly away. The right time of day to have the Bible study depends on your climate. Too hot in the afternoon? Have it in the morning. Too cold in the morning? Have it in the afternoon. You finally need to choose a time when everyone you want to invite is free. Now that you have your date and time, it’s time to plan the setup!
The Setup
To plan the setup, you need to see what you have and be creative with it. Do you have a table in your backyard? Add some folding chairs. Don’t have a table or chairs? Have a Bible study on a picnic blanket. Make sure that your setup is really big because Bible studies require a lot of room for notes and stuff. Now, it’s time for the fun part: choosing a Bible study topic.
Bible Topic
This is the fun part! Choosing a Bible study topic can be hard since there are so many interesting passages, so let me help you choose one. If God tells you to choose one, obviously choose it. If He hasn’t said anything, you could have everyone you invited vote for a topic. Choosing some Resurrection Sunday verses or verses about being made new through Christ is fun for a spring-themed Bible study. I’ve found that a Bible study can go anywhere when I suddenly remember a bunch of related verses. Remember to be flexible because you don’t have to stay on that topic. Bible studies can take you anywhere! The most important part is to let the Holy Spirit guide you and your guests in your Bible study.
Materials
Now, let’s move on to materials for your Bible study. Tell everyone you invite to bring their Bible, a notebook, a pen or pencil, and a highlighter. But someone might forget something, so always be prepared with extra materials on hand. You can find a cute spring pencil holder and fill it with extra pens, pencils, and highlighters. Make sure to also find some extra paper for people who didn’t bring a notebook.
The Plan
The agenda of a Bible study changes often, so don’t plan too much. Just remember to share what passage you’ll be studying, read it (everything can take turns reading verses), share what you observed (go around in a circle), connect this to other passages, have everyone apply it to their lives, and take turns praying. Bible studies go many different directions, so don’t be so stuck to a schedule.
Extra Details (not necessary, but fun)
This is my guide on how to plan the extra details that aren’t necessary, but are still fun. For decorations, go light on them because spring weather is unpredictable. It could suddenly start raining or be more windy than you expected. I wouldn’t recommend balloons because this is all outdoors. If you must have decor, I would recommend flowers or outdoor garden decorations.
For snacks, make spring-themed snacks, like fruit salad, flower cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and sandwiches. If you serve cupcakes, cookies, or sandwiches, serve them with a wrapper so you don’t get your hands messy during a Bible study. For fruit, chips, and other stuff like that, have your guests eat snacks with chopsticks like my brother does when he plays video games. And make sure to serve water bottles! This is a non-negotiable.
As for games, you should always do them at the end of a Bible study because they can be distracting. Two spring Bible study game ideas I have are painting and trivia. Find some wooden flowers or other spring things at a craft store. Gather some paint and paint them at the end of the Bible study. For trivia, you could do Bible trivia, Saint Patrick’s Day trivia, Resurrection Sunday trivia, or just spring trivia in general. Whatever fun details you choose to include, I think your Bible study will turn out amazing!
And that’s how to plan an outdoor spring Bible study in your backyard! It’s not that hard if you leave room for flexibility, remember your guests’ preferences, and let God take over. I hope you have a great time at your spring Bible study! If you liked this blog post, please tell me in the comments sections down below. If you had a spring Bible study, tell me how it went too!
