Are you a tween or teen who’s thinking about starting to journal? If so, this post is for you! You may not be sure yet if you should start journaling because you don’t have enough time or don’t like writing, so I’m giving you 5 reasons why tweens and teens should have a journal! I hope these reasons make you want to start a journal soon. Let’s dive in!
1. Preserving Memories
Journaling is a great way to preserve memories. I journaled every day when I went on vacation. All of those memories are now preserved forever in writing! My older self can now look back at all of those memories and sorta relive them!
Even if your day wasn’t “special”, journaling is still useful. One reason you may not want to journal is that nothing happened that day. Even if the only exciting thing was eating cookies one day, still journal! It’s useful! By the way, click here to check out my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe!
If you can’t remember what you wore two days ago, simply look at your journal. Can’t remember what you did over the weekend? Read your journal. Just remember to write down all of the stuff that you think you’ll find valuable later on. I’ve found this very useful in my day-to-day life!
2. Ideas and Inspiration
Ideas and inspiration are another reason why journaling is so worth it. I write down all of my ideas, thoughts, and questions in my journal. That way, I can read through it when I’m looking for inspo for whatever.
Need an idea for a school assignment? Journaling can help! I’m sure my older self will be so glad that I journal when looking for ideas for a personal narrative.
3. Writing Practice
Journaling is great for practicing writing! This is one reason why many choose not to journal. I’m a writer, but I acknowledge that others don’t like writing. Yeah, it may be tedious for some.
But for those like me who love writing and want to improve, journaling is amazing! I love experimenting with different writing styles when describing events. It’s a great way to practice!
Also, journaling helps me practice and improve my handwriting! That’s just a little extra reason.
4. Sparking Creativity
This reason is similar to reason 2. When journaling at the end of the day, a bunch of ideas come to my mind. What if I did this? Should I try this? What if this is the reason this happened? I make sure to jot all of those ideas down.
I’ve noticed that journaling makes me think differently. It could possibly be because of the last reason that we’ll talk about, reflection.
5. Reflection
Finally, journaling is a great way to reflect on the day. This is what I do every day. When writing, I ask myself if I accomplished my goals for the day, if I lived according to the Bible, and what I’ll do better the next day.
Self-reflection is a powerful tool! I’ve noticed that it helps me accomplish goals. This is my favorite reason to start a journal!
Extra Tips!!!
Before you go, let me share some extra tips for you when journaling!
- You don’t have to journal every single day if that would burn you out. It doesn’t matter if you miss one day. Consistency is what really matters!
- Make a list of what you want to include in your journal each day. This could include your outfit for the day, school, lunch, afternoon activities, evening, and random ideas. If you don’t like rewearing the same outfit, I’d include your outfit. If you’re like me and always forget what you did yesterday afternoon, include afternoon activities.
- A journal entry isn’t a 500-word essay. Even if it’s short, that’s ok! Again, consistency matters most.
- If you don’t have enough time to journal or just don’t like writing at all, set a timer for 5 minutes. Five minutes isn’t that long. Write about your day, ideas, and reflection for just five minutes. Even if it’s one paragraph, that’s ok. If you like typing better than writing, use the notes app.
- Instead of listing random details, try to make your day into a cohesive story. This is good if you want to go back and turn it into a personal narrative for a school assignment one day. But if there isn’t a cohesive story or you don’t plan on writing an assignment about your day, listing random details is ok.
And that wraps up my 5 reasons why tweens and teens should have a journal! I hope this post helped you decide if you should start soon! As you can tell, I love journaling because it preserves my memories, lets me be creative, and helps me reflect to achieve my goals.
