Have you ever seen that butterfly cake hack before? Well, I have. I’ve been seeing it all over the internet for some reason. It’s basically where you take a circle cake, cut it in half, cut two triangles out of the sides, and it looks like a butterfly when you decorate it. I had an event coming up, so I decided to try it! I tried the butterfly cake hack, and here’s what happened. Let’s dive in!

1. The Brownie

I chose to make my butterfly cake out of brownie instead. A few weeks ago, my family went on a picnic and we brought brownies that were made from a brownie mix. Everyone liked them a lot, so I decided that brownies would be the safest option for this cake. Brownies are also dense and stable, which is perfect for decorating. I poured the brownie batter into two cake pans (I’m pretty sure they were 9 inch cake pans), and baked them according to the directions on the box. I also made another pan of brownies that wouldn’t get decorated for those who don’t like frosting. The brownie box made two brownie cakes, so I decided to make two butterflies.

After the brownies cooled, I took them out of the cake pans. I cut the first circle brownie cake in half with a serrated knife so that the cut would be clean. Now, it was time to make the two halves actually look like butterflies!

2. Butterfly Time!

In order to turn these two brownie halves into butterflies, I had to rotate them 180 degrees to make the curved sides face each other. I then cut out a triangle-shaped section of brownie from the straight part to look like a butterfly. I was so happy with how they looked! They looked like a butterfly-shaped brownie! I did the same thing with the other brownie circle. They looked fantastic! It was then time to decorate the butterflies.

3. Frosting and Decorating the Butterfly Cakes

I decided to make one of the butterflies pink and the other yellow. I used Watkin’s food dye (affiliate) to make the pink frosting. The color is so pretty! I can’t believe that it’s a natural dye! I made sure to make the frosting spreadable, but not too runny. Usually, I use my cake tools to decorate cakes, but for this one I had to use a butter knife.

After I evenly spread the pink frosting over the cake, it was time to add the center of the butterfly and pearls! I used chocolate frosting and a star tip to make the center of the center of the butterfly (I don’t know what it’s called). I had no idea what I was doing, so I just piped up and down along the center. Next, I switched to a circle tip to add the antennas. Finally, I added pearls to the edges of the wings. It was messy, but I think it looked pretty good.

I did the same thing with the yellow cake, but added termeric to the frosting instead of red dye. Both turned out better than I thought they would, but I liked the pink one better.

4. Serving the Butterfly Cake (or should I say brownie)

When it was time to serve the cake, I really didn’t cut it in any special way. I just served it based on how big of a piece I needed. Everyone loved the cake! It was pretty and delicious. Both cakes and the non-frosted brownies I also made were gone in a few days. I think it was a successful mission.
