Welcome to Fun Fact Weekend: Friday Day One! Today, I’ll share some cool historical facts that I’ve learned so far. I am doing American History this year. I learned about government documents, wars, and eras. It’s so interesting to connect what’s happening today with things from the past. Let’s start already!

American History Fun Fact #1:

American flag

The real Independence Day is July 2nd, when Congress actually voted for independence! The Declaration of Independence was officially adopted on July 4th, 1776. I thought that was super interesting.

American History Fun Fact #2:

Many of us were taught that Paul Revere shouted, “The British are coming! The British are coming!” But in reality, he didn’t say that. After all, everyone in the colonies was British! That wouldn’t have made any sense to them. Instead, he warned, “The regulars are coming!”

American History Fun Fact #3:

United States Constitution

Did you know that the United States Constitution was inspired by many British documents? Because of this, the Constitution has roots that go back hundreds of years. Some of these documents include the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. The Founding Fathers knew their history. This helped them create the amazing United States Constitution.

American History Fun Fact #4:

George Washington never actually lived in the White House! John Adams was the first president to live in the White House.

American History Fun Fact #5:

Did you ever have a Teddy Bear? The Teddy Bear was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. Let me explain. On a hunting trip, Theodore Roosevelt did not want to shoot a bear. This led to a political cartoon. Then, a store started to sell toy bears that it called “Teddy Bears”. This is how we got the stuffed animals. This fact also helps me remember if it’s the Teddy Bear Roosevelt we’re talking about or FDR.

American History Fun Fact #6:

During World War 1, Americans started renaming German words to sound more patriotic. For example, hamburgers became “Liberty burgers”, dachshunds became “Liberty Pups”, and people renamed sauerkraut to “Liberty cabbage.” Imagine going to a fast-food drive-through and saying, “Can I have a Liberty burger to go with my Liberty cabbage. My Liberty Pup also wants a plain Liberty burger patty. Thank you!” That would be interesting.

American History Fun Fact #7:

During the Great Depression, some Americans still enjoyed ice cream! It was affordable and lifted people’s spirits.

American History Fun Fact #8:

During World War 2, Navajo code talkers helped the United States win battles in the Pacific. They sent messages in Navajo. The Japanese couldn’t understand them! This led to many American victories.

American History Fun Fact #9:

Before sending humans into space, scientists sent animals into space. The USSR sent a dog named Laika to space in 1957. Dogs could become astronauts! Americans sent monkeys and even mice into space. How would you like your dog to become an astronaut?

American History Fun Fact #10:

Before the 1990s, the internet was for scientists, the military, and universities. Then, it became available to anyone in America. They could send emails or type without using a typewriter. This was huge! Now, we even have AI.
