Welcome the new season with apple donuts! Autumn is here, though it’s still in the 90s outside. I love fall, even though school starts. The trees are beautiful. Fall starting also means that we’re one step closer to Christmas! Thanksgiving is also so soon, which is a great holiday that reminds me to be thankful.
Recently, I wanted to try this apple donut recipe because autumn is here. What screams autumn more than apple donuts with almond butter and cinnamon? Yeah, I had to try it. These donuts are apple slices that are cut horizontally and covered in chocolate. I carefully cut the apple slices and dunked them in chocolate. I sprinkled cinnamon over them and let them sit in the fridge. After they were ready, I tried and loved these apple donuts! I think you’ll love them too. What is there not to like about these apple donuts? Topped with cinnamon, these will make you feel the fall vibes. Before we start, let me share with you some tips and things you should know.
Tips and Things You Should Know
Slicing the Apples
The hardest part about making these apple donuts is slicing the apples horizontally. Usually, you cut the apple vertically, but for this, you need to put the apple on its side and cut it. You should see a star in the center of each apple slice, which is the core that you need to cut out. I cut it out with a serrated knife. If you have a tiny circle cutter, use that. After the apple slices are ready, make sure to dry them with a paper towel so that the chocolate sticks.
Melting the Chocolate
Melting the chocolate is easier than slicing the apples. Just melt the chocolate and almond butter in a microwaveable bowl in bursts of 30 seconds. This ensures that the chocolate doesn’t burn. If it burns, the texture turns bad. Not good for apples.
Something else you need to know is how to temper chocolate. I use the seeding method, which is the easiest method for beginners. Basically, you have to mix already tempered chocolate chips into the melted chocolate chips. This makes the melted chocolate copy the pattern of the already tempered chocolate.
Dipping and Setting Up
The final steps are dipping the apples and letting them set. Use your fork and spoon to effectively dip the apples. I used a toothpick to give them a swirl on top. I also topped them with cinnamon after the swirl. My apples took about an hour to set up, but yours could take 30 minutes to 2 hours in the fridge. Try to eat these in a day or two because the apples will release water after a day, which messes up the chocolate coating.
Ok, that’s everything you need to know about making these fall apple donuts! It’s time to make them now!

Apple Donuts
Ingredients
- 2 round apples
- 2 cups of chocolate chips (plus more for tempering)
- 2 tablespoons almond butter
- Cinnamon

Directions
- First, wash and dry the apples. On a cutting board, cut the apples horizontally to make circular slices. Now here’s the hard part. Cut out the center core of these apple slices to make them look like a donut. Be careful when cutting the center out! They could snap in half! That happened to one of my slices. I was able to get nine. It would be ten if that piece didn’t break. Make sure the apples are dry before moving on to the next steps. Trust me. Read below why you should dry them.
- Next, melt the two cups of chocolate with the two tablespoons of almond butter. Microwave them in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Mix and repeat until it’s all melted. Temper the chocolate by adding a handful of chocolate chips to the melted chocolate. Mix until most of the pieces are melted. Fish out the unmelted chocolate chips.
- Take a spoon and a fork. Dip the apple slices into the bowl full of chocolate. Cover the apple slices in chocolate with the spoon and flip them with the fork. Make sure it is covered completely. You can make more chocolate if you run out. Put the dipped apple slices on a cookie sheet with parchment paper. I made a design on the apple donuts with a toothpick. Top them with cinnamon.
- Refrigerate the apple donuts until the chocolate is firm. This takes about an hour or two. When it’s firm, you’ll have the perfect fall donuts!

That may have been hard to make, but it gets easier once you get the hang of it. So, welcome the new season with apple donuts today! If you tried this recipe, comment to let me know how it went. Before you go, let me tell you why I told you to make sure the apples are dry before dipping them in chocolate!
Why you shouldn’t dip the apples in chocolate before drying them:
The first time I made these, I made a mistake. I didn’t dry the apples!
Chocolate is made with oil. I forgot that water from apples and chocolate don’t mix. When I dipped the apples, the chocolate didn’t stick, causing messy apple donuts. Have you ever wondered why oil and water don’t mix? It’s because water is polar and oil is not. Being polar means having atoms with a partial positive or negative charge. Water’s polarity enables it to break apart only polar molecules. Because of this, water can’t mix with oil. Soooooo DRY THE APPLES BEFORE DIPPING THEM!
That’s all. Bye, girlies!
