Sometimes, you’re bored with only a piece of paper and a pencil to play with. Yes, you could play tic-tac-toe, but that gets boring really quickly. That’s why I have a list of fun games to play on a piece of paper that aren’t tic-tac-toe! All of these games are easy to learn, easy to play, and super fun with friends or family members. Are you ready to see these games? Let’s dive in!

Team Art

This game, which I call team art, is a great game to play when all you have is a piece of paper and a pencil! Basically, you and at least one other person take turns drawing for five minutes each on a blank piece of paper. The goal is to create the best artwork. You cannot talk or communicate with each other. You also can’t see what the person is drawing until your turn. This is a really fun game because it gets you to be creative.

You could also turn this game into a contest if you have enough people. First, choose a judge. Then, split up into groups of three or two based on how many people there are. Each team must have a piece of paper and a pencil. Each team will take turns drawing without talking or communicating. The person whose turn it is to draw cannot show what they’re drawing to their team. After each person on the team has a turn to draw, the judge decides which artwork is the best, and that team wins. I would definitely recommend playing this game as a contest if you have enough people!

The Map Game

This game is great to play in a room with a bunch of objects. In this game, called The Map Game, one player must draw a line on a piece of paper. This line is a map that shows the path the player must take to get to an object in that room. The other player must look at the line and guess the object based on the line. They must close their eyes as the other player chooses the object and draws the line. Understand?

If you don’t understand, let me give you an example. Let’s say you’re drawing the line. The object you choose is an apple across the room, slightly to your right. Imagine you were to walk to that object. Draw your path on that paper from a bird’s-eye view. Now, let’s say your friend is guessing. Your friend would look at the line you drew and imagine where you’d end up if you walked in the line’s direction. They would see that the line leads to the apple and guess the apple. Ok, let’s move on to the next game!

Pictionary

This is one of my favorite games to play on a piece of paper because I love drawing. If you don’t know how to play Pictionary, let me tell you. Basically, one person draws an object, and the other person has to guess that object. Many variations of this game exist. Some have timers included. Some keep track of points. I usually don’t have a timer or keep track of points. Another fun version of this game is to draw a person that everyone knows and have everyone guess who it is. This game is so much fun because it is a classic, customizable game. Also, if you want to learn how to draw a Christmas tree, click here!

Competitive Wordle

Have you ever played Wordle? Imagine Wordle, but with a group and competitive. Let me tell you how this game works. One person chooses a five-letter word. On the piece of paper, they write five dashes to be filled with letters later. The other people take turns guessing a letter and where it goes in the word chosen. If they guess the right letter and spot at the same time, the person who chose the letter writes the letter in that blank. Suppose they guess the right letter in a wrong space. The person who chose the word writes the letter above the word, but not in any of the blanks. If the word doesn’t have the letter, it gets written in a box. Or you could make everyone remember the letters to make it harder.

Everyone takes turns guessing letters and spaces until someone thinks they know the word. If someone guesses the word right, they win. If not, they are out! Everyone keeps guessing until everyone is out or someone guesses right. Be the first person to guess right! If everyone gets out, the person who chose the word wins. I hope you have fun playing this game!

Picture Slices

This game, called picture slices, is a fun game that you can play by yourself, with one other person, or with a whole group! And you only need paper and a pencil! Let me tell you how to play!

First, you need to draw something in the center of the piece of paper. It could be a watermelon, a person, or anything else you can think of that has symmetry. Don’t make it too detailed. Just make an outline. You then need to draw lines to split the picture into slices based on how many people are playing. If you’re playing by yourself, you can do two or four slices. If you’re playing with one other person, do one line down the middle. For more than two, make a slice for each person. Now the fun part! Everyone playing turns their slice of the picture outline into a masterpiece in their unique art style. If you’re playing by yourself, experiment with different art styles or themes. This game is really fun to play with a pencil and paper!

Hangman

I had to include this in the list. It’s a really fun word game! In case you don’t know how to play hangman, let me tell you.

One person chooses a word and draws blanks for each letter. The other person guesses a letter. If the letter is in the word, the other person writes the letter in the blank where it belongs. If the letter is not in the word, the other person draws one part of a stick figure. The goal is to guess the word without letting the full stick figure be drawn. This game is very similar to competitive Wordle, but it’s a classic that I did not make up.

Fast Reaction Game

This is the final of my list of fun games to play with a piece of paper that aren’t tic-tac-toe. This game tests how fast your reaction time is. It is great for groups of three or more people. It’s fun, fast, and great for passing time when you only have a pencil and paper on hand.

To play, you must first place a piece of paper and a pencil in the center of everyone. You then must choose a judge to call out words and assign a shape to everyone playing. Choose a condition (like a category or letter). If the judge calls out a word that meets that condition, then everyone races to grab the pencil in the middle and draw their shape on the piece of paper. Each shape drawn is a point to that player. Now, the judge can trick people by saying words that sound like a word that meets the condition, but aren’t the word. If someone draws their shape for a word that doesn’t meet the condition, the point doesn’t count, and they lose another point. Have fun!
