Are you tired of going around in a circle and saying what you’re thankful for as a game every year? If that’s you, don’t worry! I have five fun Thanksgiving games to play with your family this year! You will laugh hysterically, have fun, and most importantly, remember how thankful we should be for our country and everything else. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
1. Charades: Thanksgiving Edition
Charades is a SUPER fun game to play with your family for Thanksgiving. It’s hilarious, gets you to work as a team, and gets you to think outside the box. A few years ago, I played charades with my family for Thanksgiving. Here’s everything I did!
What I did
First, I made paper cards with different Thanksgiving words, such as “mashed potatoes,” “pilgrim,” and “Plymouth Rock.” Next, I shuffled them at the table. Then, I told the first person who would act to take the first card of the deck. Finally, I had everyone guess the word. The first person to guess the word gets the card. Whoever had the most cards at the end of the game won.
How to Play
Let me give you more details on how to play so you can play this with your family this year:
- Cut out a bunch of paper squares, depending on how big your family is. Make extras in case you need a tie-breaker. Write one Thanksgiving word on each paper. You can write foods, history terms, or traditions. Put the cards in a deck and shuffle them.
- At the table, choose someone to act out the word. They will choose the first card from the deck. Whoever guesses the word first wins that card. Then, the next person acts out the next word and so on.
- At the end of the game, when there are no more cards, everyone counts their cards. Whoever has the most cards wins. The prize can be a gift or bragging rights.
That’s how to play Charades: Thanksgiving Edition! I hope you play with your family this Thanksgiving!
2. Thanksgiving Trivia
I LOVE Thanksgiving trivia! It really tests my knowledge on things. If your family loves trivia too, then play Thanksgiving Trivia this year! Let me tell you how to play.
How to Play
Here’s how to play:
- First, write a bunch of Thanksgiving trivia facts on a piece of paper. ChatGPT can generate some for you, or you can take this Thanksgiving quiz for facts!
- Then, ask your family each trivia question. Whoever gets it right gets a point. Make sure to keep track!
- Keep asking questions until you run out. Whoever has the most points at the end wins!
Have fun playing this game! I hope you learn something new.
3. The Thankful Game, but Better
This game is going around in a circle to say what you’re thankful for, but better. That’s pretty vague, so let me tell you what exactly this game is.
What Exactly is This Game?
In this game, everyone goes around in a circle to tell everyone one thing that they’re thankful for. They write their name and what they’re thankful for on a paper card when it’s their turn to share. After that, everyone goes around in a circle again to remember what a random person at the table is thankful for. Let me explain that in more detail.
More Detail
- First, make paper cards for everyone to write their name and what they’re thankful for. Go around in a circle to say one thing you’re thankful for. Each person writes their name and what they said on the cards.
- After everyone is done writing and saying what they’re thankful for, put all the cards in a hat or bucket. Go around in a circle again, but everyone has to remember what someone else was thankful for. You pull a name from the bucket, and the person whose turn it is has to try and remember what that person was thankful for. Draw again if you picked that same person from the bucket. Tell them if they are right or wrong. Take that name out and continue until everyone has guessed.
- This game is just for fun, and I wouldn’t have points or a winner, but you can if you want to.
Do you understand the game now? I hope you play this game this year and remember all we have to be thankful for!
4. Thanksgiving Mad Libs
This game will make you cry out of laughter on the floor. It’s super funny! You also don’t need to get out of your seat to play, which is great after eating all that food. I love doing Thanksgiving Mad Libs. Here’s how to play!
How to Play
- First, find a Thanksgiving Mad Lib on the internet. Print it out. You will notice that it is a story with blanks. Under the blank, it tells you what type of word you will ask someone for. It can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, number, or more. Make sure you are the only person who knows what the story says, or else it won’t be as funny.
- Next, go in a circle and ask the first person for a word that fits the type of word under the blank. For example, if the blank has noun under it, ask for a noun. The person may respond with “Waffle.” The word should be super random and funny. Write the word in the blank. Continue until the story is over.
- After all the blanks are filled, read the story. Because no one else knows the story, it will be super funny.
Have an amazing time playing Thanksgiving Mad Libs! Ok, one last game idea!
5. Sus Candy Corn

This is the last of the five fun Thanksgiving games to play with your family. If your family is good at acting, this game may be just for you! It’s fun, makes you interact with others, and involves candy! Doesn’t that sound awesome? Let me tell you more.
How to Play
- First, fill a large resealable bag with candy corn. If your Thanksgiving group is large, then you might want to make two or even three.
- Next, secretly give the candy bag/s to a random person/people. They will be the imposter/s. They have to hide the candy in their jacket or bag. Everyone else is the detectives trying to find the candy. They shouldn’t know who the imposter/s is. They should also receive a code word that the imposter doesn’t know and has to guess to fit in.
- The detectives will ask everyone else questions, trying to find out who the imposter is. The impostor/s should also ask questions to blend in. If the detective thinks that someone is acting sus, they can accuse them of being an imposter. If a detective accuses someone wrongly, they are out. If they are right, they get the candy! If everyone except one detective is eliminated, the imposter wins and gets the candy.
